New Problems Call For Innovative Solutions – Mobile Phone Monitoring Software

Distracted Driving, Sexting, Bullying – new issues force new techniques for dealing with them. Anybody that wants to keep up with how youth, employees or lover are using their phones should know about available mobile phone tracker software that is becoming very common and can do a lot more than track the location of cellphones. Innovative technologies are prompting a vigorous discussion regarding the desirability to balance privacy and protection.

New spy phone software programs that use the power of the internet to capture SMS text messages, mobile phone GPS location, incoming and outgoing mobile phone call logs data and sends it to a web private account or forwards it to an email address.

You can transform the mobile phone into a remote listening device by sending messages to remotely control its microphone, activate it, and monitor the cell phone surroundings or Intercept Calls and surreptitiously tap into mobile phone calls and listen to conversations.

Mobile phone monitor software is often marketed to catch cheating wives and husbands, but other legitimate uses include Parental Control checking how kids are using their, mobile phones – such as the troubling sexting epidemic – and for employee monitoring for productivity, industry regulatory compliance and ediscovery, among numerous other purposes.

Smartphones are the cell phones with computer capabilities. Brands such as BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows Mobile, Android, Nokia Symbian – all have spyware software for sale. Spy Call and Call Intercept mobile phone bugging require GSM networks. Millions of smartphones a month are sold in the United States and Canada, and sales are approaching 150 million delivered per year around the world.

As sending text messages from mobile phones has become a centerpiece in youth social life, parents, educators and advocates have grown increasingly concerned about the role of mobile phones in the sexual lives of youths. A recent research study from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project (pewinternet.org/topics/Teens.aspx) concluded that 4% of cell phone using young people between the ages of twelve and seventeen indicate they have transmitted sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images or videos of themselves to other people using SMS text messages . This practice is commonly known as “sexting” in today’s slang. Additionally, 15% say they have received these kinds of images images of someone they actually know by way of SMS.

By analyzing more than 40,000 monthly US mobile cellular bills, Nielsen determined that American teenagers sent an average of an inconceivable 3,100 text messages every month during Q3 last year. Teens were interviewed and gave Amanda Lenhart, Senior Research Specialist and author of the report a variety of explanations behind the motivation to participate in sexting. These included the researcher’s interpretation that “…sexually suggestive images had become a form of relationship currency,”; that sexting images “… are shared as a part of or instead of sexual activity,” and that SMS text message sexting is a way of establishing a relationship. Sensitive images are also passed along to other people “… for their entertainment value, as a joke, or for fun.”

A very high quality software application that assists parents and employers monitor cell phones and archive their mobile communications information including GPS location, SMS text messages, MMS messages and phone event logs is MobileBeagle. Visit this website if you would like to read more about reliable small business Mobile Monitoring Software for BlackBerry and Android Smartphones .

Ignore This and You Might Ruin Your Kid’s Life – Sexting is a Potential Sex Crime

A recently published report by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy indicates that about 20% of teens (ages 13-19) and a hard to fathom 33% of young adults (ages 20-26) have shared nude or semi-nude pictures of themselves either over mobile phone SMS text messages or by posting on the web. Teenage girls are slightly more likely to do this than boys and a very distressing 11% of the young teen girls (ages 13-16) admitted to sending inappropriate photos of themselves.

Recent reports from The Nielsen Company and the Pew Research Center indicate a handful of factors that should be troubling to parents and guardians. These topics are also an opportunity for software solutions companies. There is an increase in the number of teenagers that own cellular phones, the amount of texting they do, and more troubling the number of young adults that participate in “sexting” – the sending of provocative images or text messages from cell phones.

What’s the fuss? Just innocent fun, youth discovering their new sexuality?

You might want to reconsider. Sending a sexually explicit picture of someone underage is a sex crime. Young people are being arrested, convicted and having to register as sex offenders. They are gambling with more than emotional distress and humiliation, charges of sexual misconduct can result in getting suspended and expelled from school, losing scholarships, and losing jobs. A felony conviction may also affect future employment opportunities, such as those offered in law enforcement and other high-security clearance positions. In other words, ruining their lives over a little “innocent” fun.

There isn’t anything innocent about it. Consider that if a young teen sends a sexting photo of themselves – they could be violating child pornography statues in most states.

Getting convicted in criminal court for “sexting” can have other serious consequences. In addition to the potential jail sentence and/or fine imposed by the court, they may be required to register with the Sex Offender Registration Board for the next 20 years. Furthermore, the criminal court may order the surrender and destruction of the computer or digital devices used.

As sending text messages from cellular phones has become a centerpiece in youth social life, parents, educators and advocates have grown increasingly worried about the role of cell phones in the sexual lives of young adults. A recent survey from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project (pewinternet.org/topics/Teens.aspx) concluded that four percent of mobile phone owning teens ages 12-17 indicate they have transmitted sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images or videos of themselves to someone else via SMS text messages. This activity is commonly known as “sexting” in today’s slang. Additionally, 15% say they have received such images of someone they already know via text message.

According to a study from marketing research firm The Nielsen Company (blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/under-aged-texting-usage-and-actual-cost/) American teenagers send an undreamed of average of ten text messages every hour that they are not in school or sleeping – and most likely a lot during their classes too!

By analyzing more than 40,000 monthly US mobile mobile bills, Nielsen concluded that American teenagers sent an average of an astonishing 3,146 texts every month during Q3 2009.

Their younger counterparts – tweenagers – ages 9-12 years old sent about 1,100 texts every month. That that averages out to about four per hour they were in school or not sleeping. In comparison, the average number of monthly texts sent by all mobile phone users combined was a little more than five hundred. In the fourth quarter 2009, tweenage users aged nine to twelve increased text usage by eight percent just about doubling the quantity of text messages.

Pew Research points out that sexting occurs most often during one of three typical scenarios:  The first,   exchanges of images just between two romantic partners;
the next, lists exchanges between partners that are then shared with other people; followed by, exchanges between people who are not yet in a relationship, but with one person hoping there will be one.

Teens were interviewed and gave researchers various reasons behind the impulse to get involved with sexting. These included the researcher’s interpretation that “…sexually suggestive images had become a form of relationship currency,”; that sexting images “… are shared as a part of or instead of sexual activity,” and that SMS text message sexting is a way of establishing a relationship. Sensitive images are also passed along to friends “… for their entertainment value, as a joke, or for fun.”

Teenagers also described to researchers the peer pressure to share these types of pictures. Not surprisingly the report revealed that teens who are more intense users of mobile phones are more likely to receive inappropriate images. For these youths, the phone has become such an important conduit for communication and a variety of content that turning it off is nearly unthinkable.

The combination of risk-taking and sexual exploration during the teen years mixed with regular connection via cell phones and other mobile devices “…creates a ‘perfect storm’ for sexting,” said Pew’s Amanda Lenhart. “Teenagers have always grappled with issues around sex and relationships, but their coming-of-age mistakes and transgressions have never been so easily transmitted and archived for others to see.”

Despite the indications that per user usage has peaked (they can’t possibly use them more can they?!?) Nielsen predicts that overall text message usage will increase as the avid user population ages and entices the older generations to text with them in order to stay in contact with them. Existing SMS users are expected to continue to use texting extensively and as tweenagers age they will increase usage. The average number of text messages per user has increased every year, and there is room for growth.

If you’ve got teens then in all likelihood not shocked by the usage statistics. But chances are you’re also either in denial that your children are involved in sexting, or you’re actively seeking solutions to the problem. While parents may get angry that all the texts their teens and tweens are sending are going to break the bank, Nielsen analysis shows the average cost of a single text message is only about one penny. The real issue concerning parents is not so much how often teens use their phones but more about how they use their phones, and when they are using them.

Sexting is a very complex issue. Consequently, it is very difficult to provide advice on how best to manage these situations. The National Center For Missing & Exploited Children policy states that there are four roles to every sexting case: the person seen in the image, the individual who took the photo, the distributor(s) of the photo, and the recipient(s) of the photo. In some cases one person may assume more than one of these roles (e.g., a child takes a sexually explicit image, of herself and sends it to a classmate). In other situations, multiple people may take on a single role (e.g., a child takes a sexually explicit picture of himself and sends it to a classmate who then forwards the photo to the entire high school senior class). It is important to consider the intent and motivation of each of the parties in every situation.

The National Center For Missing & Exploited Children advocates parents monitor cell phone use. A practical technological solution available for parents and guardians to find out what their kids are doing is mobile monitoring technology.

Sexting can be illegal. Parents are responsible to stop it. Especially when low cost solutions can be ordered over the internet. A really great software package that includes remote control of smartphone settings, and combines Phone GPS Tracking with SMS text message, Call Log, MMS multi-media message monitoring, and a web account for storage and review is PhoneBeagle.

It all could come down to a matter of interpretation. Spyphone software for cell phones doesn’t necessarily mean ‘spyware’. Does ‘monitoring’ represent ‘spying’? Definitions rely upon use and intent of spyphone software rather than a technical definition. Stereotypically the difference often comes down to word usage; ‘stealth’, ‘undetectable’ and ‘secret’ on one side, ‘monitoring’ on the other.

Spyware is a wide category of malicious software that can insert itself on smartphones, normally coming from internet connections. Spyware is often designed toseize partial control of computer or cell phone operation without permission from the device’s user. Spyware is malicious computer software applications that surreptitiously obtain, monitor and report data from a person’s computer without their knowledge or consent. This can include private data such as details of sites visited, and even e-mail. Spyware does other nasty stuff like as slow down processes and change programs and settings.

A lot of people might include ‘spy’ in terms used to describe legitimate monitoring of cell phones. There are a lot of lawful explanations to monitor mobile phones. If the monitoring has grounds then possibly the term ‘spy’ is benign, and does not bring to mind illegal purpose. Not only is Parental Monitoring permissable, and Employee Monitoring permitted, they are both vital and compulsory. If not legally, then morally and ethically; seeing as parents and employers are empowered to diminish tragedy and liability that stem from mobile phone misuse or the need for protection. With authority comes responsibility.

Fortunately there is something to consider is that spyphone software programs require acceptance. Some spy phone software programs can be sent to the phone remotely, but not installed or activated. Enlightening sources deliverinig information for spy phone software applications include

  iPhoneintercept.com Spyphone Software Blog ,
Blackberryintercept .com Spy phone Software Blog, and
Bestspyphone.com Spyphone Software Blog

There are an assortment of processes employed by coders in creating spyware, used on cell phones also called spyphone software. Bluetooth spy phone software programs don’t exhibit evident legitimate reasons for smartphones monitoring. Bluetooth spy phone software applications seem to be designed for surreptious phone tapping which suggests illegal intent, and not valid monitoring. On top of that Bluetooth spyphone software applications normally need user permission while calls are being made to activate which means they don’t work as surreptious spyware, in turn showing that Bluetooth spyphone software applications are a failure. Bluetooth spyphone software applications are a bad idea.

Other spy phone software applications typically intercept cell phone events such as GPS location, SMS messages, Call Logs and sometimes email. This data is either sent to an internet account for access, or forwarded by SMS to another cell phone or email account.

GPS Monitoring – GPS tracking delivers position that can be displayed on maps. Different systems have different capabilities regarding whether they track real time or historical location and how often location is polled and how often updates are sent. Excessive GPS usage can drain a mobile phone battery.

Capturing SMS – Incoming and outgoing SMS are usually captured. Some spy phone software programs will record SMS even after being erased. SMS stands for Short Message Service, a communication system that allows users to transmit 160 characters, to and from GSM cell handsets.

Call History Logs – Incoming and outgoing call history logs of the smartphone. Some spyphone software programs will also record address book data.

A lot of people may want mobile phone spyphone software applications for justifiable monitoring for numerous reasonable justifications, as well as some that are a little less acceptable.

To Catch a Cheater: Likely the most prevalent justification why someone needs to use cell phone spyphone software applications, is to catch a cheating spouse.

Parental Monitoring Young Adults Smartphone Usage: Parents and guardians use smartphone spy phone software programs to do something about distracted drivers, sexting, predators, excessive use.

Employee Monitoring: Companies need cell phone spy phone software programs to respond to Productivity, Insider Threats, eDiscovery, Training and other uses.

Communications Back Up : Corporations, Parents and just about anyone use cell phone spyphone software programs to do something about data loss prevention, when in the event of their phones are lost or stolen.

A smartphone is mobile phone with computer-like capabilities or others might refer to them as a miniature computer that acts like a cell phone. But smartphones are much more than just the merger of mobile phone and personal digital assistant (PDA).

As mentioned before, and something to keep in mind is that spyphone software programs require acceptance. Some smartphone spyphone software programs can be sent to the phone remotely, but not installed or activated. It isn’t a Trojan or a worm – they need a bit human intervention and mobile phone are a bit different than computers. Some anti-virus software can detect malicious software onmobile phones. Malware is malicious software programs often intended to be intrusive or damaging. Computer viruses, Trojan horses and worms are common types of malware. Malware will often damage your computer, notebook or smartphone and may steal your personal information or just be annoying. Malware is not just an annoyance, it normally ruins computers and smartphones while potentially copying personal data.

There are many bad people out there making problems and some kind of anti-virus software program is mandatory on a broadband-enabled computers, laptops, and or cell phones. Namebrand anti-virus software applications like Norton or McAfee are often bundled by mobile internet service providers and offered for free. Other people rely on free versions of products like Avast and AVG. One way or another – the reality is an anti-virus software application is necessary to protect computers, laptops, and cell phones.

Some spyphone software programs are quite refined and offered by reasonably trustworthy companies; however regrettably the bulk of offers come from disreputable vendors or other kinds of shady characters with false promises. Phone Beagle, at www.phonebeagle.com is a legitimate cell phone monitoring software company.

What’s a a Smart Phone?
With over 3 million a month sold in the US it is pretty likely that soon you will be able to answer that question yourself!

A smartphone is a device that permits people to make mobile phone calls, while also offering added functionality that essentially are commonly akin to computers. But smartphones are much more than the mere fusion of cellular phone and personal digital assistant (PDA).

To help get a sense of what a smartphone means a short history of its evolution may be of use. While the early mobile phones changed by getting smaller and more powerful, they also added features. The first stage toward cellular phones being referred to as smartphones was the introduction of the personal digital assistant (PDA). While mobile phones main purpose personal digital assistants, symbolized by the Palm Pilot, were designed to be used as personal and portable organizers, and little more. Personal digital assistants stored address book information, ‘to-do’ lists, and could sync with desktop computers. In time personal digital assistants gained wireless connectivity and owners began emailing with them. Just as personal digital assistants were integrated into the mobile office environment, cell phones started sending and receiving e-mails. Personal digital assistants became more like communications devices, cell phones gained computer-like features. The result is the smartphone.

There is not a cell phone industry standard definition for what makes up a smartphone. But there are some typical characteristics among smartphones, including:

QWERTY Keyboard: By most definitions smartphones almost universally include a QWERTY keyboard. This means that the keys are laid out similarly to they are on typewriters and computer keyboards, rather than like a numeric keypad. Paradoxically the QWERTY Keyboard was originally designed in the 1800’s to slow down typists to keep typewriters from jamming. We’ve been struggling with that development ever since, with no hope for respite in the near future!

One more typical function among smartphones is having an Operating System. As a rule, a smartphone will use an operating system that allows it to operate software applications much the same as a computer. The smartphone operating system is the strongest when identifying a smartphone. Some of the big names handset manufacturers use their own proprietary system which is exclusive to their brand – BlackBerry and Apple iPhone. Other operating systems are licensed to hardware manufacturers, Android, Windows Mobile, Symbian operating systems are used by a wide range of handset brands. If you say” I have a BlackBerry”, then they have a BlackBerry operating system. If someone says I have an HTC or a Samsung, it might have Android, Windows Mobile or even a Symbian operating system. However not all BlackBerry operating systems support the same features. It is critical to identify the version, if attempting to check if the smartphone is compatible with third-party software applications such as Parental Monitoring, Employee Monitoring and Information Backup software from PhoneBeagle for BlackBerry and Android .

Software and Web Access: Almost all cell phones provide some kind of software, as a contact manager for example , but a smartphone is going to have the capability to do a lot more. Surf the web create and edit documents and spreadsheets, review files, download additional software programs for all kinds of purposes . The expansion of high speed data networks combined with the addition of Wi-Fi, makes smartphones very practical.

Communications and Messaging: Any cellular phone includes SMS text messaging, but smartphones allow email. MMS multimedia message service video and graphics is becoming common too. Exchanging text messages, technically identified as Short Message System (SMS), but more commonly referred to as “texting”, is a straightforward, effortless, and convenient manner to keep in touch among mobile phones. One feature of SMS text messaging that makes it particularly sensible for mobile software programs is that it utilizes mobile fixed identity, the phone number. SMS texting is the most widely used data application in the world, with about 2.4 billion active users, or three quarters of all cell phone subscribers.

A GPS locator isn’t unique to smartphones, but they are making more use of this technology. Soon GPS will become almost as basic as the telephone, or more likely included with every cell phone. GPS can determine positions accurate to a matter of. In fact, incredibly with advanced forms of GPS it is possible to achieve measurements to better than a centimeter! In a sense it’s like giving every square meter on the globe its very own address. These systems can be viewed as Network Based, Handset Based or a Hybrid approach. GPS location is Handset based as it requires software applications installed on the mobile phone in conjunction with GPS hardware. Triangulation and CellID are Network Based as they use the equipment and information from the cellular provider. Hybrid systems combine methods to make best use of available information and to make position cell tracking faster.

A very interesting software application that assists parents and employers monitor mobile phones and everyone to backup their communications information including GPS location, SMS text messages, MMS messages and phone event/call logs is Phone Beagle.
Mobile Monitoring software for BlackBerrys and Androids from Phone Beagle..

A workable technological solution available for parents and guardians to find out what children are are upto is spyphone technology. Mobile Phone GPS Basics

Soon GPS will become almost as basic as the telephone, or more likely included with every smartphone. GPS can calculate locations accurate to a matter of just a few meters. In fact, incredibly with advanced forms of GPS it is possible to achieve measurements to less than a centimeter!

In a sense it’s like assigning every square meter on earth its very own address. GPS receivers have become very economical as they have been miniaturized to just a few integrated circuits. Nowadays days GPS is becoming integrated into cars, boats, planes, construction equipment, movie making gear, farm machinery, laptop computers and especially cell phones.

Tracking mobile phones is a popular topic with a lot of interest. A lot of the discussion surrounding cell tracking, cell phone GPS and mobile phone track software applications could be helped by a GPS Satellite primer and glossary.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. GPS satellites broadcast signals from earth orbit that GPS receivers use to determine three-dimensional location (latitude, longitude, and altitude) plus precise time. The GPS system is made up of 3 main segments: Space Segment, Control Segment and User Segment.

The GPS Space Segment incorporates twenty-four to thirty-two satellites that orbit the earth in medium earth orbit MEO. These satellites are referred to as the GPS Constellation, and they are orbiting once every 12 hours. They are not geosynchronous, they travel at over 7,000 mph. GPS satellites are solar powered but have battery reserve for when they are in the earth’s shadow. They are placed so that at any given time there are at least 4 satellites ‘visible’ from any point on earth. Small rocket boosters on each satellite keep them properly positioned. The satellites last about ten years until all their fuel is exhausted.

GPS Satellites are not communications satellites. Geostationary or communications satellites use a higher altitude 22,300 miles above the equator. These satellites are used for weather forecasting, satellite TV, satellite radio and most other types of global communications. At exactly 22,000 miles above the equator, the earth’s gravitational force and centrifugal forces are offset and are in balance. This is the best location to position a communications satellite. The earth rotates at about 1,000 miles an hour, and because of their high earth orbit the geo-synchronous satellites need to move at about 7,000 mph to keep position. This is just about the same speed as GPS satellites, but since geo-synchronous satellites are 10,000 miles further away they stay in place relative to the earth.

The GPS Control Segment is comprised of Master Control Station, an Alternate Master Control Station, and a host of dedicated and shared Ground Antennas and Monitor Stations that work together to make sure the satellites are working to specification and the data they send to earth is accurate.

The GPS User Segment is composed of of GPS receivers taking the shape of cell phones and , laptops, in-car navigation devices and hand-held tracking units along with the people that use them, and the software applications that make them work.

GPS receivers determine location by precisely timing the signals transmitted by GPS satellites. This data includes the time the message was transmitted, precise orbital information (the ephemeris), and the general system health and rough orbits of all GPS satellites (the almanac).

Consider that there is a basic difference between cell phone GPS Tracking and GPS Navigation. GPS cell tracking is typically associated with someone maintaining records of either real-time or historical mobile phone position, while Navigation deals with the smartphone user determining how to get from point A to point B. Neither use works without some sort of third-party software program.

An impressive software package that features remote control of smartphone~cell phone~mobile phone~handset~device settings, and combines Cell Phone Tracking~Mobile Phone Tracking~Phone GPS Tracking with SMS text message, Call Log, MMS multi-media message monitoring, and a web account for storage and review is PhoneBeagle.

Global Satellite System Glossary of basic terms.

GPSThe Global Positioning System is made up of 24 GPS satellites, portable GPS receivers, and various ground-based support facilities.

GPS receiverThe either a standalone handheld device or electronic unit mounted on a vehicle dashboard or other movable item such as a shipping container, and now particularly common to be found inside phone handsets . Abbreviated “GPS” in common use.

Global Satellite System Frequently Asked Questions

Why does GPS receiver only work outside?
GPS satellites are positioned in their orbits to be sure that from any point on earth there are a minimum four satellites in site at all times. Although the satellites send signals by radio wave, they needs a clear of site to the receiver. Once the GPS satellite drops behind the horizon, or a building, or even heavy cloud cover, the radio signal may not reach the receiver.

What do the satellites do?
The GPS satellites are broadcasting the time. Both the satellite and the GPS receiver use atomic clocks for extreme accuracy. By measuring the difference between the time given by the satellite and the time in the GPS receiver, the GPS can calculate the distance from the satellite.

How does the GPS satellite know where it is?
The satellites keep position archived inside in calculated tables. But they can deviate off course over time. To correct this, the satellite communicates with fixed reference stations located around the world. Each time it connects with the ground stations, the satellite adjusts its internal position tables.

Does a GPS receiver transmit information back to the satellite?
No, they don’t do that. GPS equipped mobile phones will transmit data but not to the satellite.

What do Oprah, the Department of Transportation, the Auto Club, insurance companies and, state governors have in common?

The US Department of Transportation recently proposed to ban text messaging at the wheel by interstate truck and bus drivers. This regulatory action follows up on its call to lessen the number of distractions that lead to crashes.

The proposal would make permanent an interim ban put in place in January by the Transportation Secretary. The proposed ban applies to drivers of passenger buses and commercial trucks operating vehicles weighing more than ten thousand pounds. To give an idea of the serious nature of the problem, the drivers could face civil penalties and/or even criminal charges.

The United States Transportation Department reported that 5,870 people were killed and over a half million were injured in 2008 in accidents involving distracted drivers. They didn’t speculate how many of those deaths and injuries involved cell phone. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration echoes the Transportation Department statistics with projection that about eighty percent of crashes are caused by driver distraction. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety is sponsoring research to determine the extent of the distracted driver problem. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) states that driver inattention is a leading factor in many accidents, and mobile phone use and texting are leading causes of driver distractions.

States aren’t waiting for research reports and are enacting new laws dealing with cell phone use and texting . The GHSA reports that currently 20 states and the District of Columbia ban all drivers from sending text messages while behind the wheel. An additional nine states prohibiting texting by beginner drivers. The remaining states are expected to implement the ban before too long. But it is also believed that the laws are not enough to stop the problem and technology is neede. The Governors Highway Safety Association says it supports texting bans for all drivers, but has doubts about enforcement.

A leading source of a potential solution is Phone Beagle. Their software is installed on Android and BlackBerry cell phones and monitors GPS location, and text messages along with other phone log activity.

The trucking and passenger bus industries support the text message prohibition, and many corporations have enforced policies against texting when behind the wheel. The government, industry and safety organizations all agree that distracted drivers caused bysending text messages is a menace to society, and is worthy of action. Advocates for dealing with the problem also include celebrity Oprah Winfrey.

The issue is emerging as a new phenomenon. As navigation systems, cellphones and other mobile electronics have become common in cars and trucks, safety advocates and the government have pushed for restrictions.

As regulations and technology work to to address the issues a software package from Phone Beagle is available to help deal with monitoring phone use. Their software installs on Android and BlackBerry smartphones and monitors GPS location, and text messages along with other phone log events.

Intercept SMS Text Messages

As sending SMS text messages from cellular phones has become a focus in teenager social life, parents, educators and advocates have grown increasingly concerned about the role of mobile phones in the sexual lives of young adults. A recent research study from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project (pewinternet.org/topics/Teens.aspx) concluded that four percent of cell phone using young people ages 12-17 say they have sent sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images or videos of themselves to other people via text messaging. This activity is typically known as “sexting” in the current slang. Additionally, fifteen percent say they have received these kinds of images images of someone they actually know by way of text message.

According to research from market researchers The Nielsen Company (blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/under-aged-texting-usage-and-actual-cost/) American teenagers transmit an undreamed of average of 10 SMS messages per hour that they are not in school or sleeping – and probably a lot during school too!

By researching over than forty thousand monthly US mobile mobile bills, Nielsen determined that American teens sent an average of an incredible 3,146 texts every month during Q3 2009.

SMS Text Monitoring

Their younger counterparts – tweenagers – from age 9 to 12 sent about 1,100 texts each month. That that averages out to about four per hour they were in school or not sleeping. In comparison, the average number of monthly texts sent by all cell phone users combined was just slightly above 500. In the fourth quarter 2009, tweenage users ages 9-12 years old increased SMS usage by 8% and almost doubled their text message volume.

Monitor SMS Text Messages

Pew Research points out that sending provocative images occurs most often under one of three specific scenarios:  The first,   exchanges of images only between two romantic partners;
the next, lists exchanges between partners that are then shared with other people; followed by, exchanges between people who are not yet in a relationship, but where often one person hopes to be.

Teenagers were interviewed and gave researchers a variety of reasons surrounding the impulse to participate in sexting. These included the researcher’s interpretation that “…sexually suggestive images had become a form of relationship currency,”; that sexting images “… are shared as a part of or instead of sexual activity,” and that SMS text message sexting is a way of starting or maintaining a relationship. Sensitive images are also passed along to other people “… for their entertainment value, as a joke, or for fun.”

Teens also described to researchers the peer pressure to share these types of images. Not surprisingly the report revealed that teenagers that are intensive users of cell phones are more likely to to be sent sexually suggestive images. For these teenagers, the phone has become such a common means for communication and content of all kinds that turning it off is unlikely.

Perfect Storm Sexting meets Parental Control

The combination of risk-taking and sexual exploration during the teen years mixed with regular connection via mobile phones and other mobile devices “…creates a ‘perfect storm’ for sexting,” said Pew’s Amanda Lenhart. “Teenagers have always grappled with issues around sex and relationships, but their coming-of-age mistakes and transgressions have never been so easily transmitted and archived for others to see.”

The Teen Text Messaging Market Will Continue to Expand

Despite some indications that per user usage has peaked (they can’t possibly use them more can they?!?) Nielsen estimates that overall SMS usage will increase as the avid user population ages and entices the older generations to text with them in order to stay in contact with them. Current SMS users are expected to continue to text extensively and as tweenagers age they will increase usage. The number of text messages sent per capita has grown every year and should continue.

Mobile SMS Tracking Software

If you’ve got teenagers then you’re probably not shocked by the usage numbers. But chances are you’re also either in denial that your kids are involved in sexting, or you’re actively seeking solutions to the problem. While parents may be upset that all the texts their teens and tweens are sending are going to break the bank, Nielsen research indicates the average cost of a single text message is just one cent. The real issue concerning parents is not so much how often teens use their phones but more about how they use their phones, and when they are using them.

As texting from mobile phones has become a centerpiece in youth social life, parents, educators and advocates have grown increasingly concerned about the role of cellular phones in the sexual lives of teens. A fresh research study from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project (pewinternet.org/topics/Teens.aspx) concluded that 4% of mobile phone owning young people ages 12-17 indicate they have sent sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images or videos of themselves to other people via SMS text messages. This practice is typically referred to “sexting” in the current vernacular. Additionally, fifteen percent say they have received such images of someone they already know by way of text message.

According to a study from market researchers The Nielsen Company (blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/under-aged-texting-usage-and-actual-cost/) American youths transmit an unimaginable average of 10 SMS text messages per hour that they are not in school or sleeping – and most likely a lot during school too!

By researching over than forty thousand monthly US mobile cellular bills, Nielsen concluded that American teenagers sent an average of an astonishing 3,146 text messages every month during the third quarter 2009.

SMS Text Monitoring

Their younger counterparts – tweenagers – aged nine to twelve sent an average of 1,146 text messages every month. That equates to four every hour they were in school or not sleeping. To put that in perspective, the average number of monthly texts sent by all cellular users combined was a little more than 500. In the fourth quarter 2009, tweenage users aged nine to twelve increased text usage by eight percent just about doubling the quantity of text messages.

Monitor SMS Text Messages

Pew Research points out that sending provocative images occurs usually under one of three typical scenarios:  The first, involves exchanges of images solely between two romantic partners;
the next, lists exchanges between partners that are then shared outside the relationship; followed by, exchanges between people who are not yet in a relationship, but where often one party hopes to be.

Teenagers were interviewed and gave Amanda Lenhart, Senior Research Specialist and author of the report a variety of reasons surrounding the impulse to participate in sexting. These included the researcher’s interpretation that “…sexually suggestive images had become a form of relationship currency,”; that sexting images “… are shared as a part of or instead of sexual activity,” and that SMS text message sexting is a way of starting or maintaining a relationship. Sensitive images are also passed along to friends “… for their entertainment value, as a joke, or for fun.”

Teenagers also described to researchers the peer pressure to share sexual pictures. Not surprisingly the report revealed that young people that are intensive users of cell phones are more likely to receive sexually suggestive images. For these young people, the phone has become such an important conduit for communication and a variety of content that doing without it is unlikely.

Perfect Storm Sexting meets Parental Control

The desire for risk-taking and sexual exploration during the teenage years mixed with routine connection using cell phones and other mobile devices “…creates a ‘perfect storm’ for sexting,” said Pew’s Amanda Lenhart. “Teenagers have always grappled with issues around sex and relationships, but their coming-of-age mistakes and transgressions have never been so easily transmitted and archived for others to see.”

The Teenager Text Market Will Continue to Grow

Despite some indications that per user usage has peaked (they can’t possibly use them more can they?!?) Nielsen estimates that overall SMS usage will grow as the heavy text messaging demographic ages and entices the older generations to text with them in order to keep in contact with them. Current SMS users will continue to use texting extensively and as tweenagers age they will increase usage. The average number of text messages per user has increased every year, and there is room for growth.

Mobile SMS Tracking Software

If you’ve got teens then in all likelihood not surprised by the usage numbers. In all probability most parents can’t believe their children are involved with sexting, or they are looking for ways to find out. While parents may get angry that all the texts their teens and tweens are sending are going to break the bank, Nielsen analysis shows the average cost of a single text message is only about one penny. The real issue concerning parents is not so much how often teens use their phones but has more to do with how they use their phones, and when they are texting.
